Around 2007, the Corps of Engineers choose five watershed studies to provide 100% Federal funding. The common features of these studies were that they were collaborative, at a geographically large watershed level, had a system-type analysis, and each had multiple goals. All of these studies involved a partnership with a multi-agency and/or multi-jurisdictional group, which greatly facilitated coordinating and collaborating with the state and local governments in the watershed.
The studies chosen for this pilot were:
- Virgin River Watershed Analysis (Utah, Arizona, Nevada)
- Western States Watershed Study (Tulsa District)
- Delaware River Basin (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware)
- Middle Mississippi River (MMR) Regional Corridor (Illinois and Missouri)
- Great Lakes Habitat Initiative
